Our comprehensive 8-stage swimming syllabus

We have developed an 8-stage swimming syllabus, to bring our swimmers from beginner to mastery.

Stage 1

Water Familiarisation

  • Safe entry and exit

  • Breath holding for 10 seconds

  • Nose bubbles for a minimum of 5 seconds, 10 repetitions

  • Streamlined gliding from wall with a minimum of 5 second hold

  • Back star float for 10 seconds

  • Tuck float for 10 seconds

  • Flutter kicks with board for 10 metres

Stage 2

Fundamentals

  • Confidence Jump

  • Bobbing for 10 repetitions

  • Submersion to bottom of pool for 3 repetitions

  • Flutter kicks with front crawl arm pulls with board for 15 metres

Stage 3

Front Crawl + Confidence Building

  • Compact Jump

  • Straddle Jump

  • Bobbing for 10 reps without goggles

  • Streamlined gliding with a minimum of 10 second hold without goggles

  • Front crawl for 15 metres

  • Underwater swim for at least 2 metres

Stage 4

Backstroke + Intro to Survival Skills

  • Front Crawl for 25 metres

  • Backstroke for 25 metres

  • Standing dive

  • Streamlined kicking into forward tumble turn

  • Survival Sequence

    • Put on an appropriately sized PFD on land​

    • Jump into water and float for 30 seconds

    • Swim for 25 metres

    • Climb out of the water safely

Stage 5

Breaststroke + Survival Skills Development

  • Front Crawl for 25 metres

  • Backstroke for 25 metres

  • Breaststroke for 15 metres

  • Survival Breaststroke for 15 metres

  • Survival Backstroke for 15 metres

  • Treading water for 1 minute

  • Survival Sequence

    • Jump into water and retrieve PFD

    • Put on PFD in water

    • Swim for 50 metres

    • Climb out of the water safely

Stage 6

Butterfly

  • Butterfly for 15 metres

  • Continuous swimming with long sleeve top and long pants: Front Crawl (25 metres),

  • Backstroke (25 metres), Breaststroke (25 metres) and Survival Backstroke (25

  • metres)

  • Side stroke swim for 15 metres

  • Treading water for 2 minutes

  • Underwater swim for at least 5 metres

Stage 7

Endurance + Confidence Swim

  • Front Crawl for 50 metres (within 1:30)

  • Backstroke for 50 metres (within 1:40)

  • Breaststroke for 50 metres (within 1:50)

  • Butterfly for 25 metres

  • Side stroke swim for 25 metres

  • Front Crawl 50m without goggles and in long sleeve top and long pants

Stage 8

Swim + Survival Skills Mastery

  • Front Crawl for 100 metres (within 3:00)

  • Backstroke for 100 metres (within 3:20)

  • Breaststroke for 100 metres (within 4:00)

  • Starts, Turns and Finishes for competitive strokes

  • Side stroke swim for 50 metres

  • Survival backstroke swim for 50 metres

  • Survival Sequence:

    • Jump into the water

    • Remove pants and make a float with it while treading water (within 5 minutes)

    • Demonstrate Heat Escaping Lessening Posture (H.E.L.P) technique with

    • self-made float

    • Swim 25 metres with self-made float and get out of the water safely
